Providers of National Health Service (NHS) and social care services in England are required to comply with the Accessible Information Standard (AIS).
In general people with a disability or sensory loss need to receive information and communication support which is fit-for-purpose. The AIS provides a framework for organisations to put processes and procedures in place to ensure this happens.
The AIS has 5 key steps: Identify, Record, Flag, Share, Meet. This ensures that the needs of people are not missed by the system when they move between different healthservice providers or between different departments at a hospital.
All members of staff are responsible for ensuring compliance with AIS.
There is a helpful quiz that explains the main points about AIS. You can access it on the NHS e-learning service. The quiz is also useful for all organisations who want to make their services accessible to all clients.
