The Government has committed to learning disability training for NHS staff. This means that learning disability will soon become mandatory training for NHS staff. The reason behind this shift in policy is that research has repeatedly shown that people with learning disability, some of whom are also on the autism spectrum, are unable to get the care they need, and in some cases, this has contributed to their death. Overall, most of the problem stems from failure in communication strategies, tools and support.
